Clicks but no leads? These 7 fixes solve the most common reasons small business Google Ads accounts fail to convert.

If your Google Ads get clicks but no leads, the cause is usually one of seven issues: broken conversion tracking, loose keywords, missing negative keywords, a mismatched or slow landing page, wrong location settings, or a bid strategy without enough data. Fix tracking first, then traffic quality, then the page.

If forms, calls and bookings are not tracked, Google’s bidding cannot learn. Test every form and call button, and make sure each fires a conversion in Google Ads (via Google Tag Manager or GA4).
Broad match without strong data often attracts research-only searches. Start with phrase and exact match on buyer-intent terms such as “emergency plumber near me”.
Review your search terms report and exclude words like “free”, “jobs”, “DIY” and “course”. This alone can cut wasted spend significantly.
Every ad group should send visitors to a page that repeats the same promise. Sending all clicks to your home page hurts conversion rates and Quality Score.
Use “Presence: people in or regularly in your locations”. The default can show ads to people only interested in your area.
Most paid clicks come from mobile. A page that loads slowly or hides the phone number loses leads. A fast, conversion-focused landing page is often the biggest win.
Smart bidding such as Maximize Conversions needs conversion data. New accounts may do better with manual or Maximize Clicks bidding with a cap until conversions build up.
